colours and words: week 7

 

 

 

 

For this colour challenge Mel used a mix of Pink Paislee chipboard elements (Fetching) on a background sheet of We R Memory Keepers diecut (Anne). The mix of aquas and yellows worked perfectly with the colour guidelines and the title (believe) was included in with the journaling. Final touches were added by dressing up the chipboard a little with some Queen & Co rhinestones (Halloween) and a splash of machine stitching.

 

 

This was a colour palette that Nicole might have overlooked had it not been for this challenge. She hardly ever uses yellow yet was impressed by how it emphasised the subtle golden tones in her photograph.

The fresh colours were the perfect combination for this story about a cheeky note written by Nic's daughter Madeleine as to why she couldn't clean her bedroom. A row of eyelets in the gold colour laced with Heidi Swapp tulle balances the layout design nicely.

It was love at first sight when Sassafras introduced their Paper Whimsies at the last trade show. Steph adored the flowers and little cards and couldn't wait to start working with them. Here in this layout, she has grouped together the Flower Paper Whimsies and made big beautiful bloom out of them. She has then added sequins and Pearl Glimmermist.

With the delightful Paper Whimsy Cards, not only has Steph used them in the design of her page, but joined two together for journalling purposes. You can see the effect of these on the close up images above.

 

      

This fun OTP project was created by Steph for her eldest daughter Emma. Emma needed a blackboard to write reminder notes, and Steph found this gorgeous item at a garage sale. She painted it and re-decorated it with Sassafras Patterned Papers using Sassafras's gorgeous edges and a photo of her two girls. The Paper Whimsies looked so colorful and bright along the side of the blackboard and Steph used Sassafras's Felties as the playful centrepiece in the Flowers.

Sassafras's wonderful products are perfect for children's decor and add life and fun to their little abodes.

 

 

 

Sassafras is perfect for anything to do with kids, so Steph thought she would make a card for her daughter's birthday. the paper whimsies have a gorgeous texture which give the card an interesting look, and combined with Sassafras's Alpha Letters and Felties make this project the perfect accompaniment with a present for a little girl or boy. Sassafras's stunning products take all the hard work out of designing projects, and this card took no time make and the result is a beautiful keepsake.

weekend inspiration: tim holtz

 

Chris put together some photos from a recent road trip with her family to create this lovely 5x7 Grungeboard album. Inking the Grungeboard element shapes using Colorbox Chalk inks and covering the pages of the album in SEI Dill Blossom papers, Chris kept a unified look throughout the album. She said the Grungeboard element shapes inked up beautifully and made terrific subtle embellishments for her album. Chris particularly loved the Tim Holtz journalling tickets which made writing down a few notes on the pages very easy. And the Adage tickets where great for pages where Chris didn't want to journal but wanted to convey a sentiment.

 

Carole created this very delicate blue and white layout using Tim Holtz Grunge Paper, and Grunge board Elements Stripes. The softness of the blue and white with the hint of black and the pretty Grunge Paper flowers is just beautiful.

Carole also used Tim Holtz Destress Ink "Broken China" for the touches of blue on the layout. Carole also embossed the Grunge paper and then inked over the top of the embossing, Carole did the same for the cut out flowers and Grunge Board Elements.

Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist "Pearl" was sprayed over the layout to give it a slight sheen, and finished off with a couple of stamped butterflies using Pink Paislee Clear Stamps, and a little lace.

 

Suz created this layout using BasicGrey papers and lots of Tim Holtz’s gorgeous circle Fragments.  Each ‘bauble’ received a different treatment, from backing in patterned paper and glittering to inking and Glimmer Misting.  If you look carefully you can see the stitching running from the top of the page down to each Fragment to create the bauble’s string.

     

Suz used Grungepaper to create these lovely flower cards.  Inspired by Windy Vecchi and her fabulous flowers, she first stamped onto the grungeboard with Stazon. They were then handcut, coloured with Distress Inks and Glimmer Mists and adhered to Heidi Swapp Invisibles cards.  The fabulous Metal Foliage she has used can also be found in the Tim Holtz range.

 

When looking for creations using Tim Holtz products where better to go than the man himself! We are just awe-struck by this AMAZING grungeboard bracket album Tim has created! How fabulous does the ornate plate look amongst all the grunge accents that Tim has so expertly distressed?!!!

Audrey Underwood created this very unique creation with the Tim Holtz Grunge Paper, and as you can see the beautiful detail in this project is amazing.  Audrey also used Grunge board - Stripes Elements, bookplate, Hambly pattern paper, Tattered Angels Glimmer mist – combinations of Graphite, Tattered Leather and Frost and Black cardstock.

Audrey did a transfer onto the Grunge paper (Little Girl) and then used her beautiful antique style to embellish this beautiful project, thank you so much Audrey for share this gorgeous project with us.

 

The lovely Jennifer Sweatman shares with us these three stunning cards created using various Tim Holtz products including grungeboard and distress inks. Here's a little word from Jenn on using Tim's products -

"Working with grungeboard and grungepaper is SO fun. They both take distress inks like a dream and are easy to shape to create dimension. Because it is thinner, grungepaper is ideal for stamping and cutting out small or intricate shapes- it is just like cutting cardstock and adding mediums like paint, stickles, glossy accents etc. is no problem because grungeboard and grungepaper are super sturdy."

Caz's favourite product pick from CHA ended up being a paper range that she was a bit dubious about at first sight. She loved the girly butterflies, sweet birds and pretty roses of Basic Grey's Porcelain range but was worried that the papers were a bit too pale and washed out for her liking. All that changed when she saw a layout done using the papers and realised that they were brighter than she had first thought.

It's a well known fact that Caz's eldest daughter can't walk past anything shiny without looking in it so when Caz saw this chipboard frame she couldnt resist turning it into a mirror using some foil, and adding it to the front of a star album she made her daughter to fill with her favourite photos (probably of herself, lol). The pretty pinks in the album match the colour of the wall that Darcy's room has recently been painted so it makes a pretty addition to her desk.

 

Caz has a sponsor child in Zambia who she corresponds with. As she is unable to send gifts she thought that she would make some pretty cards to send which would be a bit more interesting than just a letter.

This sweet little bird is one of the Basic Grey Porcelain Chip Stickers. Caz added chipboard wings and an eye using the Opaline Half-Pearls for a bit of dimension, before perching him in a flourish nest decorated with a small piece of Basic Grey fiber.

 

colours and words: week 6

 

 

 

This was a more challenging variation on the pink and green palette than Suz was expecting though the slightly-off more tertiary colours were beautiful, they were harder to find examples of.  Lucky for her the gorgeous new SEI Mimosa provided the perfect cardstock backdrop and of course changing photos that didn’t rely on colour to black and white was a go-to solution.

Suz used few embellishments, but loves the new BasicGrey bling and handcut a Hambly leaf, and a combination of all-new Websters and Rose Moka alpha stickers worked wonderfully with the colour palette.

 

It's not often we see Nic use a lot of cardstock in her layouts, but this one, using Kraft cardstock, is perfect timing with the release of new Aussie Scrap Source textured cardstock in 75 colours. Nic paired the Kraft cardstock with Basicgrey Eva, carefully cutting patterns to create a delicate pattern across the layout.

The emphasis in this layout is definitely the story, with journaling printed directly on to the cardstock capturing memories of when Nic was a little girl.

A simple yet effective layout, using cardstock and one range of patterned paper. Finishing details include a Twiddleybitz butterfly, Rose Moka alphas and BasicGrey Bling.

With so many fabulous products released at CHA it's quite a hard choice to pick a favourite, however, over the past 6 months or so Chris has discovered quite an addiction to stamping and in particular Hero Arts stamps. From the cute little character stamps to the decorative border stamps and lovely traditional wooden stamps Chris is hooked well and truly! Join us now for a look at Chris's creations using the stamps shown above by Hero Arts.

Chris also couldn't resist showing us some fabulous cards from her stamping buddies Lucy and Jenn.

 

Chris created these fanatastic stamped candles using the Clear Whimsical Elements teaching kit and the Sparkle Clear Arigato set of Hero Arts stamps. Simply stamp onto a single piece of white tissue paper, then cut around your stamped image (you don't need to cut around every fine detail, cut close to the edges) then place the stamped tissue image onto the side of the candle and then heat with a heat gun. You will see the tissue paper melt into the candle after just a few seconds.

And it will appear as though you have stamped directly onto the candle.

Chris used both Colorbox Chalk inks and Memories black ink to stamp onto the tissue paper. Cheap white candles work better for this as the wax melts quicker. Chris learnt this technique from a Hero Arts blog video tutorial.

 

Chris used masking techniques with the frog and mushroom stamps from the Whimsical Elements teaching kit to create these fabulous cards. For the background on the 1st card she used the Woodgrain background stamp which covers nearly the entire surface of a Hero Arts pink notecard, Chris just trimmed off a couple of cm's of card that the stamp did not cover. Chris coloured in the stamped images with coloured pencils and used a shading effect to create depth.

 

Using the Whimsical Elements teaching stamp set again Chris has created these very simple and fun cards. One of the cards Chris has just stamped with simple black ink and the other she has stamped with brown ink and coloured with pencils using the shading technique again. Pop dotting your stamped images also really makes the card stand out!

Chris can't stop creating with these fabulous stamps and she has now created these fabulous cards using the cute critters from the Whimiscal Elements teaching kit. Chris stamped the critters directly onto Scenic Route pattern paper and then cut them out and mounted them onto her cards.

 

Chris loves these Creative Tree stamps and wanted to use them on an 'outdoors' layout. She had these great photos from a recent Houseboat trip and creating a grid of squares she put together this fabulous layout. Chris heat embossed each tree image using Hero Arts white embossing powder. She inked around the edge of each square and then adhered to her layout.

Chris also used the scallop border stamps on this layout, she stamped the border onto pattern paper and then cut it out and used it next to the pattern paper strips as a wonderful scalloped edge to her layout.

 

Chris has found she just can't leave the Creative Tree stamps alone and has created another layout using these lovely stamps, this time stamping onto bright cardstock and backing this on kraft cardstock.

 

Chris really utilised her many Hero Arts stamp sets in this layout to create this fabulous layout inspired by Kiara Lee. Chris stamped the Stitched flower stamp onto the pink cardstock and masked off the flower part of the stamp so that it did not stamp, but instead Chris placed Hero Arts spring art flowers in place of the stamped flower image. Chris also stamped butterflies from the Clear Design Share Laughter set using Violet ink to create a pattern paper effect on the purple cardstock.

The flourish border stamps create yet another interesting effect at the border of this layout and Chris finished it off by stamping a couple of sentiments.

 

Here Chris has used the same technique with the Stitched flower stamp but this time on a card. She has also used the Clear Scallop border stamps, some gems and other smaller Hero Arts stamps.

 

These gorgeous cards were created by Lucy Abrams and were part of the inspiration for my layouts above. I just love the way Lucy white embossed the Creative Tree stamps onto the Hero Arts Kraft note cards - such a stunning effect. Lucy has also used some Hero Arts gems and various other buttons and pearls to embellish the tree images.

 

 

And here again Lucy has created another faboulous set of cards using the Creative Tree stamp set. We love the way Lucy has co-ordinated the button colour with the colour stamped behind the tree image. All buttons and stamps that Lucy has used are from Hero Arts, infact Lucy says Hero Arts is her favourite and mostly used stamping company.

We've shown you Jenn Biederman's beautiful work before and here she is again with these absolutely adorable cards created using the new Hero Arts 'Sending happy thoughts' stamp set. Jenn is the master at creating little scenes with the stamps on her cards as you can see by these 3 cards. I'm sure you are inspired as much by Jenn's cards as we are, so thank you very much Jenn for sharing your inspiring cards with us.

weekend inspiration: tattered angels

 

 

One of Steph's not so secret addiction is Tattered Angels Products. What she loves the most about the product is the saturated colour that you can get by using the Glimmermists on your layouts. Here Steph has used Mimosa, Lemon Zest and Lime Twist to enhance the Autumn theme of the layout and the title "Grow". Steph has got an old piece of music sheet and crumbled it up into a small ball.

Once opened out flat she has sprayed the Glimmermist in light mists, in all the different autumn colours over her sheet. Then Steph used a paper towel to dab and mix the colours together, drying the Glimmermist as she goes... She then sprayed the Darker Mists into puddles and left them to dry. The effect of this is amazing. To finish off, Steph inked key areas and tears little bits of the edges just to give it that well worn look.

Next Steph coloured the Glimmerchips in the leaf shapes, leaving puddles to dry, so it looked like dried rain. She used the same process for the Glimmerchip Butterfly and Ornate Frame. The gorgeous trees were used using the Tattered Angels "Blossom" Stamps, stamped onto the course side of laser ink acetate. She used two techniques here. The green tree was sprayed Glimmermist so it puddled on the stamp.

She the used a wipe to wipe the edges around the stamp, and flicked any excess fluid onto a scrap piece of paper. When she stamped the orange tree, she used a Versa Cube ink and left to dry. You can see two very different images using the same stamp, one has a defined, crisp look, the other and watercolour feel to it.

The TA alphas were sprayed and then inked around the edges for depth.

 

 

It's no surprise that we have a lot of Nic Howard's projects in our Tattered Angels post, Nic discovered Glimmer Mist in the middle of last year and hasn't been able to stop using it since!

This layout was created on white cardstock. and was embellished with Glimmer Mist. Nic placed a glimmer screen on her page and then sprayed 'brick' coloured glimmer mist across the cardstock, lifted the glimmer screen carefully and a shadowed image was left behind.

She then sprayed the same glimmer screen with 'garden ivy' and used it as a stamp on her layout, leaving a green image. She repeated this technique on a spare piece of white cardstock and cut the image out, adhered across a photo and her layout was complete - aside from the title, which is also from Tattered Angels. So simple, yet so effective!

 

 

With exception of the black Rose Moka paper and the white cardstock, this layout is almost all Tattered Angels product. Nic used a Glimmer Screen as a stamp, creating a flourish image which she then cut out and adhered to her layout base. She added a shipping tag and hero arts flowers, which had both been glimmer misted, as well as a stamp from the Tattered Angels range. Nic finished her layout with some Glimmer Glass in the regal range , gorgeous pics of her son and niece and alphas to finish.

We thank Janine Koczwara for allowing us to share these three stunning examples of using Glimmer Mist to transform already beautiful pages into stunning ones.

 

And finally a little piece of Ngaire Bartlam fabulousness!  Ngaire has Glimmer Misted over the top of a sheet of Heidi Swapp’s invisibles to create this wise and striking piece.

colours and words: week five

 

 

Here's what Chris has to say about this layout: 'I took this photo of my daughter Annaliese and my nephew Jack enjoying a bit of poetry from my husband a few months ago and I've been wanting to put it down onto a layout and didn't really know how I wanted to the page to come together.

That's where these sorts of challenges are perfect. When I saw the word prompt was 'listen' I thought of this photo and worked a title around it. I used quite a few different pattern papers from Crate Paper and some more from SEI and a little bit of Scenic Route thrown in for good measure! With some Hero Arts flowers and a combination of Crate Paper and Little Yellow Bicycle alphabet stickers the layout came together wonderfully!'

 

Caz combines 2 different companies paper rages to get the colour scheme for this weeks challenge, Heidi Swapp's World Traveller and Dream Dining Room, and Basic Grey's Granola. She cut out a few heart shaped templates and then randomly cut the hearts from different papers that complimented each other. All the edges were inked with brown ink to give them uniformity.

This is probably not the first colour scheme she would have chosen for this picture of her daughter and one of the Disney Fairies in Disneyland but the neutral background lets the bright colours of the fairy stand out. The sentiment also seemed to fit exactly as even though Caz's daughter is starting High School next year, she is one of those children that likes to hang onto little pieces of her childhood, including her belief in fairies.

 

And thanks to those few readers who have found time over the school holidays to continue the challenge – not many but we love the different interpretations of the colour palette.

As soon as Nic H saw the 'Knave of Hearts' collection from Collage Press, she knew it would become a firm favourite. Knave of Hearts has everything Nic loves about a paper line. It's filled with reds, teals, ledger colours, swirls and has the occasional splash of green to brighten up your projects. It has an element of grunge, which makes it perfect for those 'guy' pages, but it is pretty enough to be used with girlie pictures as well, and that is where Nic started creating.

 

Not just a pretty face - it's a whole lot of favourite papers too! Nic started with a base of the Knave of Hearts papers and added a layer of Aussie Scrap Source white cardstock on top. A quick spray of Turquoise glimmermist to add a little interest and a pop of colour and Nic was ready to start adding strips of paper on top.

A few small embellishments, including more of those Collage Cuts (see those red dots? Nic popped them out and dropped them on the layout and that is where they landed... don't ya love it when it works like that?!). She finished the layout with some of the matching alphas from the Knave of Hearts collection and a new Hambly transparency to add that block of black.

When Nic first got these papers she said "This may be my most favouritist collection ever!" It is a collection that suits a wide range of scrappers, and I could definitely see why Nic loved it. All the easily used embellishments are a bonus to a collection that just screams out "grab your guy pictures!" but as you can see it's not limited to just pics of your favourite boy. Nic has quite beautifully scrapped an album for her daughter .

Knave of Hearts is a collection that will suit a variety of topics for all sorts of scrappers. If Knave of Hearts is this versatile, we look forward to seeing what they release at the next CHA!

Layer upon layer of slightly grungy papers with splashes of contrast - especially red, that is Nic's favourite scenario and this layout is no exception!

Nic combined many different Knave of Hearts papers along with one of the new Collage Press Zig Zag diecut papers to create this layout. Take a look at the details, it was so easy to add interest with the Collage Cuts that go along with this line, just pop 'em out and place them on the layout!

 

 

             

This 6x6 mini album is a white chipboard version by Little Yellow Bicycle. Nic used her Black Stazon ink pad directly on each page to make it black - black was the colour she wanted to create contrast with the reds and ledger colours of the Collage Press Collection.

She decided on some of Abby's favourite photos - they are ones Nic has scrapped before but Abby wanted an album for herself. The album was aptly named 'Hand in Hand" with the inside page reading "A Collection of Fav photos for Abby".

This is an idea that is perfect as a gift or for the kids, Abby treasures her pictures and keeps the book on her bedside table. Note that Nic has left a few gaps to add further photos - she just didn't want to stop the creating and may also add extra pages in the future!

Collage Press has thought of it all when designing this collection, from the double sided papers, to the way the papers all work beautifully together, to the coordinating embellishments. Nic used a lot of the die-cut journaling cuts in this album, making it really quick and easy to complete. Most pages include a background paper, a few strips of contrasting colour, some journaling blocks and the occasional punched heart! Jewels and pearls from BasicGrey add interest all the way through.

 

weekend inspiration: hambly screen prints

 

  

   

The idea of creating a layout using Hambly, and not using primary, secondary or tertiary colors was inspiration for Steph's layout of her Wedding Day. She wanted to create a mood, using a neutral palette of black, white and beige. For this she chose Hambly's overlays featuring the beautiful new Butterfly overlay release.

Here Steph cut out all the butterflies from the overlay and using glue dots attached them to top layer of her layout. This gave the butterflies a beautiful 3D layout. She has actually kept this layout on a stand in her studio, to remind her of the beautiful memories from her wedding.

 

Suz used the full sheet of the new All Mixed Up white overlay on this layout of her daughter first learning to rollerblade.  The slightly distressed look went with the theme and, failing to find patterned papers that didn’t overwhelm the photos, decided to combine two of her fave things – Hambly and Glimmer Mist.  She sprayed co-ordinating colours on a sheet of white cardstock roughly picking out the different areas of pattern in the overlay.

She kept the circle theme going with thin strips of Rose Moka papers and embellished with coloured overlays and a few of the gorgeous Technique Tuesday white chipboard shapes as a frame for her title and journalling.

 

Carole created this cute layout using the Hambly Classic Animals Brown Rubons, and Hambly Transparencies. Carole created a Wild Animal Theme using these gorgeous rubons as embellishments.

 

Sometimes there’s no stopping Carole!  She also created this cute little frame using the Hambly Classic Animal (Brown) Rub-ons, and Hambly transparencies. Carole cut out the shapes she wanted for the background and stuck them to the frame, and then placed the rub-ons onto transparency and cut them out and layered them onto the frame.  Just something cute to display in her home.

 

This layout by Carli Fennell is just beautiful, and Steph wanted to share it because of the way Carli used the funky Hambly Product and mixed it with feminine beauty. The soft tulle and tiny roses surprisingly go beautifully with the fun Sassafras Papers and Hambly Overlay.

 

This layout by the talented Kerry Lynn Yearly is just sublime, dotted with an accent of cuteness. Here Kerry Lyn has used Hambly's Classic Animal Rub Ons as a fun centre piece for her music paper flowers.

 

  

These funky little notebooks are designed by Allison Kreft Abad, and are a gorgeous addition to any handbag. Allison has used a combination of Hambly patterned papers and rub ons and the result is just stunning. Thanks Allison !
