trends of 2010: colour blocking

 

 

 

Colour blocking has been around almost as long as scrapbooking has, it’s just one of those classically simple ways of showcasing your photos.  It’s one of Suz’s favourite ways.  Recently though she’s been inspired by a new variation of colour blocking – one where small blocks are covered and layered with lots of gorgeous little details.  This allows the creative expression we all seek in our scrapbooking, but combines it with the simplicity and clean lines of the classic colour blocking technique.

In this layout the contrast in the photos between the bright sun flare and the black is mirrored in the choice of patterned papers with the black matting – a colour Suz doesn’t often use. Suz has mixed up patterned paper brands here with a fun summery combination of Pink Paislee, October Afternoon and Sassafras.

 

This example is more like the traditional flatter colour blocking, and sometimes when the photos call for it, additional layered details aren’t required.  In this layout she has called upon both the very old (check out that BasicGrey Sweetpea Jack panel!) with the very new – Pink Paislee Journalling Blocks and scrummy Tattered Angels Glimmer Glass and lots of bits in between.

 

 

 

 

As far as Suz is concerned, Christine Middlecamp is in a league of her own in the scrapbooking world, and loves how she combines exactly these two techniques – the simplicity of clean lines and the complexity of fabulous layers of detail.  Here Christine showcases the brand new Restoration line from Crate Paper in her own fabulous style.

Another master of the colour blocking technique is Kelly Goree.  She has an unerring eye for colours and patterns that work implicity well together.  I love how she has made a fabulous boy page out of BAsicGrey’s Kioshi papers – an inherently feminine line.

 

The brighter the colour and the bigger the pattern, the better it responds to colour blocking – it’s a great way of using bold and bright without overwhelming your photo.  Here Kelly uses one of the new digi templates in the BasicGrey Digital Shop as a framework for her layout.

weekend inspiration: prima marketing

 

Often we associate Prima products with feminine layouts; however Kathie’s layout shows the versatility of Prima’s recent releases. She’s used a mix of Prima’s Pastiche and Shabby Chic papers to create a charming layout of her son playing in autumn leaves.

Kathie used the Donna Downey Tree foam stamp and decorated it with Pecan Calcutta Leaves to add an autumnal touch. One leaf falls gently to the Prima brown lace and hessian that add texture at the base of the layout. Stamping around the edge of the layout with Prima’s Chicken Wire stamp, a touch of paint and some distressed inking add a rustic hewn feel.

 

 

Suz has created a simple but pretty layout using one of the beautiful Prima Songbird Vines and ready made Pink Paislee ribbon pleats to just underline and underscore her photograph – the combination almost looks like a window box.  She has also included Prima Chipboard Journalling Stickers which are not only beautifully printed but they’re glittered as well – the perfect finish for this girly page.

 

For this particular layout Louise has used the pattern of the Prima patterned cardstock to her creative advantage; using it to highlight both the pattern of the Hambly overlay, and her journaling.

 

 

 

 

For this particular layout Louise was looking to journal her thoughts a little differently than usual. So she has cut strips of Prima patterned cardstock, adhered them around the sides of the 12 x 12 bamboo natural texture paper, and then journalled along and on these strips.

 

 

Nicole isn't really a "bag" person, unless of course it's made from fabric!! She LOVES the Donna Downey canvas bags from Prima because they are literally a blank canvas waiting to be personalised to suit the owner.

In this instance, Nic cut and tore up squares of her favourite canvas fabric before going mad with as many masks, Glimmer Screens and diecuts she could get her hands on plus a few favourite colours of Glimmer Mist.

Once she was satisfied with the placement of her "patches" she sewed them onto the bag flap using a sewing machine, then added one of her favourite quotes by Dorothy Parker onto canvas patches using black Stazon and Heidi Swapp alphabet. The result is delcious layering of colour and a texture dying to be touched.

Nic also wanted to add that if you make one of these for yourself, use Vliesofix or Heat N Bond on the flap before you try and sew all the patches down!

 

Elise McKay, from Ningi Qld, has used a mixture of Prima’s Flights of Fancy, and Raspberry Tea collections in this next page. If you look closely, you’ll notice that she’s cut around the rose pattern at the base of her patterned paper to form a very effective photo corner. She’s then further embellished it with flowers, hand cut butterflies and chipboard journaling stickers. The addition of hand stitching really draws attention to the butterfly in the photograph. Beautiful page Elise!

 

This layout, by Yuka Hino of Japan, is pure girly confectionary. Delightful feminine touches make this one of the prettiest layouts Kathie had seen in a long while. Huka has used the delicate spotted papers from the Flights of Fancy collection to form the basis of her layout, then added some crimped coordinating paper and a range of floral embellishments. We're delighted that we could share this layout with you today.

 

 

Robin Schelin, Las Vegas, created this next layout using a combination of Prima’s Pastiche and Strawberry Kisses collection. The touch of lace, distressing and tiny letter stickers lend a real vintage feel to the layout, and we love the large flower embellishment that replicates the rose Robin’s grand daughter is smelling in the photo.

Janine loved the vibrancy of the Collage Press Sweet Shoppe range. She felt inspired by the die-cuts in the range and layered them on top of each other as well as using them singularly to embellish her page. To add a bit more texture, Janine also incorporated some Websters Bloomers and some Zva fabric brads.

 

We would like to say a big thankyou to Tonya from the USA for letting us share this simple but eye-catching layout about her Hubby and Son using the Jackson Lodge range from Collage Press. Tonya has a "thing" for blue and orange together. Doesn't really matter what shades but that colour combination just makes her happy.

 

 

How gorgeous is this baby boy banner created by Lisa from Arizona for a baby shower she organised. Lisa strung together some of the Collage Press Alphabet Cards and added some little decorative touches to each of them. Such a simple but effective idea, thanks Lisa.

 

We loved this layout by Tonya from Oregon using the older Camden range of papers from Collage Press. Just look at all the details, the jewelled paper border, the folded paper star and the button and ribbon embellishments. Simply gorgeous, thanks for sharing with our readers Tonya.

 

 

Lisa Toronto has created this classic designed LO from Collage Press papers. She has added extra dimension to the page by punching out paper flowers from the same paper and then pop dotting them onto the same paper. Subtle but effective addition to her page.

trends of 2010: sketches

Though sketches have been an enduring part of scrapbooking for some time, they’re bigger and more popular than ever right now!  We invited some of the leading influences in the industry to contribute to our trends series, and Technical Editor of Scrapbooking Memories, Sherry Mendoza, kicks us off with these fabulous samples.  Thanks for playing, Sherry!

I was honoured when Suz asked me to do this guest spot for Aussie Scrap Source and I knew straight away that I would do it on the current trend of using sketches.

I love doing sketches especially when my mojo seems to have done a disappearing act on me. I do have a tendency to follow sketches literally but am trying to break out of this habit. I think sketches are also a fantastic tool for those who are just starting in the scrapbooking hobby and remember that any sketch can be adapted for pages or cards. 

There are many websites for sketches and sketch inspiration, for this project, I have used sketches from the fabulous Pencil Lines website.  Both of the sketches I have used were created by the site owner Anna Bowkis.  I also have samples from my good friend Michelle Filo (a Pencil Lines Design Team member) for the same sketches which I have used. 

For my layout above, I have used Sassafras Lass (Cherry Hill) and Prima products both available from Aussie Scrap Source! 

 

 

This is Michelle Filo’s fabulous interpretation of the same sketch.

 

 

 

 

Sherry has tackled this second sketch twice, and shows just how versatile they are – though both of these layouts are both based on the same sketch they have a completely different look and feel.

trends of 2010: die cut papers

 

With this post, we welcome the fabulous Louise Williams to our design team!  Here she shares one of the most enduring trends – die cut papers – which seem to just becoming more intricate and disparate, and she shares some beautiful examples.

 

There is a continuing and growing trend amongst many manufacturers of incorporating into their ranges diecut papers. There are many designs now available, from the standard scalloped edge to the full lasercut papers that combine all the intricate details of a doily into a beautiful piece of patterned paper.

Louise created this “King of the Jungle” layout by using one of Anna Griffin’s beautiful pearl finish scalloped cardstock papers as a base. The corrugated finish adds an extra element of detail and brings a modern twist to an otherwise classic style. To create the frame she traced the scalloped paper onto the back of a co-ordinating paper, cut it out and then cut out the middle to add some colour and structure to the page.

 

 

For this second layout “Dream Big”, rather than use the diecut paper as the background, Louise cut the bottom edge off a geometric designed paper and then trimmed the remainder to form a strip, reattaching the diecut edge to create a vertical strip for the layout. The shape of the notepad edging perfectly compliments the technical feel of the other papers.

Nicole Pomeroy created this beautiful layout using a classic Webster’s Pages scalloped paper. She’s added her own modern twist by cutting out the centre and skewing the frame on a square paper base. Gorgeous layout, thanks Nicole!

 

Janis Medina-Maghinay is an expert at using diecut papers. She uses them in a unique way here in this eyecatching layout that features many different diecut shapes to create a flowing yet vibrant page. The layering of so many designs adds impact and detail without cluttering her work. Thank you for letting me share your lovely work Janis.

 

 

Thanks to Annelie Maddock for letting me share this fun page she created by cutting up a round, scallop-edged diecut sheet. She cleverly made both a focal point, and a co-ordinated accent corner from the same paper.

weekend inspiration: hero arts

 

 

 

 

 

The newest releases of Hero Arts Stamps 'Are to die for!!!' Well that is what Louise thinks! And she found she was hard pressed to choose, just one, for this particular product showcase.  Finally she settled for the beautiful wood mounted Large Line Flower stamp!

 

 

 

Whilst Lou has used a typically traditional technique with stamping and heat embossing the stamped image, she has taken one it step further, and used the stamp and the heat embossing technique to further embellish her layout and card; with the title, butterfly and heart shape embellishments, and around the border of her layout.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Suz has used the Clear Designs – Three Floral – gorgeous clear stamps designed to be gift tags.  She stamped them with Stazon and then spritzed with different colour Glimmer Mists for a fast and fabulous finish.  Cutting them out and attaching co-ordinating ribbon was the final step – doesn’t get faster or easier than that!

 

 

 

But the application of these versatile stamps doesn’t stop at gift tags.  Suz also combined them with the cute Sparkle Clear – Messages – again stamping the borders with Stazon  and this time colouring in with markers.  Suz then matted on plain coloured cardstock and stamped the messages with a co-ordinating coloured ink.  Simple but effective little notecards in minutes!

 

Jennifer McGuire never ceases to take our breath away with her stamping and her colour wizardry, and this amazing piece full of hero arts stamping, embossing and resist techniques is no exception.  we love the rainbow she has created – every little tag a perfect project in itself, but brought together to make something far more wonderful than the sum of it’s parts.  Thanks Jennifer for sharing your talent with us.
