Janine loved this Page Maps sketch and followed the basic design quite closely, even cropping her photos to the same dimensions as advised on the sketch. Then she built on it with lots of little details, layers of hand-cut paper, mixed with Prima Felt Devines and flowers in browns, greens and blues to compliment her photos.
Working from a sketch is a great way to create a double page layout. It takes the hard work out of the designing process and gives you a good place to start with positioning your photos, papers and embellishments. Sue decided to use the Crate Paper Restoration range for her double page layout and found it really fun to work with. Sue loved using the die-cut papers as the base for both of the pages.
The chipboard embellishments from the Restoration collection are really quite lovely and although they are vintage themed, Sue shows that you can use them for any type of photo, not just older ones.
Caz has used BasicGrey Max & Whiskers to introduce her darling guide dog trainee pup in a scrapbook page. She has converted the 12x12 beautifully to 8.5x11”.
Kathie wanted to base her family layout here on the happy yellow “Lace” patterned paper from Crate Paper’s Restoration collection. She’s stayed pretty true to the sketch; however rather than adopting the free-form butterfly trace in the sketch, she’s used embroidery floss (and a Crafters Workshop Dots all Around template) to create a circular shape to frame her family snapshots. This was more in keeping with the circular/continuous theme of family love, and family life.
Kathie’s applied distress inks and walnut stain liberally to further enhance the rich warm feel of the collection. She even stained the embroidery thread, then lifted and tore it back in places to reflect the shabby vintage feel of the products.
Jane Clark and Suz Doyle have created a couple of different interpretations on Becky’s sketch card. Jane has used Hambly doilies and Websters pages, wheras Suz has put Hambly and 7 Gypsies transparencies to work alongside Prima and her trusty & Gypsies stickers.

These are the sketches you need to follow – we’re loving multi-photo pages at the moment and a design guideline can really give you a fab kickstart.. and check out these wonderfully different takes on them!
This line from Cosmo Cricket has so much to offer... from papers to die-cuts.. to gorgeous chipboard shapes. In this double pager, Iris cut out the kite tail chipboard into several pieces and combined it with other chipboard shapes to create a funky and fun edge border around the layout.
Typically Louise rarely does doubles and especially ones with lots of photos LOL, However, when she had this simple but fabulous double Becky Fleck page map she just couldn’t resist - or go wrong for that matter! Louise loved this map and will more than likely use it again and again!
Carole loved creating this fun sketch, I love frames around photos, so this was made easy with the gorgeous Die Cut from the Queen Bee Collection by Pink Paislee, with co-ordinating pattern papers and tags to match. I also added some Prima Florals and Zva Swirls.
The new Pyrus range from Basic Grey was perfect for creating this sketch-based layout. As soon as she saw the circular elements in the sketch, Louise knew exactly the photo to use and by choosing circular designs in both the papers and design elements, it brought the layout together with a beautifully cohesive look.
Jane Clark has created this gorgeous little card with October Afternoon Fly a Kite papers and the ever versatile stickers which include the cutest images like the girl on the swing. Though she hasn’t interpreted the sketch perfectly literally, you can certainly still identify its’ influence, and that’s just one of the great thing about Becky Fleck’s sketches!
Suz also used the card sketch as a base for this cute little card. She has used the incredibly beautiful Pink Paislee Sweetness line and this project was made extra quick with the use of Pink Paislee’s fab embellishments which include the doodads (layered felt stickers) and the gorgeous flip notes which you will no doubt see again endlessly in her projects.

Caz has always been a huge fan of sketches, especially when she is in an inspiration slump and feels that all her pages are starting to look similar. She keeps a rather messy notebook which she scribbles sketches and ideas in when she comes across one she likes.
The beauty of sketches is that you can use the same one over and over by simply altering the size and number of photos, turning the sketch upside down or sideways or putting 2 singles sketches together to make a double page.
In this layout Caz has altered the number and size of the photos to suit the pictures she wanted to scrap. She stayed true to the general placement of them though and incorporated the title in the circles just like in the sketch. Rather than using solid blocks of colour Caz kept the elements simple by using thin strips of paper and subtle rub-ons..
Kathie loves the kick-start sketches can give to her design process. She’s used today’s sketch indicatively: to guide her photo placement and the basic positioning of her page elements. However, then she’s allowed her own style to dictate how she completed the page.
She’s added paper strips instead of the blocks of patterned papers. And rather than using layers of patterned paper on the background, she’s added detail by sponging on vines and birds using a Crafters Workshop stencil. She’s also replaced one of the indicated pieces of patterned paper with a block of journaling.
Sue is a scrapbooker who usually takes hours to design her layout. She thinks about every aspect of her layout thoroughly and nothing is stuck down until she is completely happy with her design. Sue was amazed by how wonderfully quick it is to create a layout based on a good sketch. It takes all of the hard work out of the designing process. And the wonderful thing is, sometimes you just need a starting point and then the layout seems to take on a life of it's own.
Sue used the beautiful 7 Gypsies Avignon papers and tags to create her layout. The photos were taken on Mother's Day last year and although at the time she thought they weren't wonderful photos, looking back on them now, she is grateful to have them. We are not present in the photos with our kids enough and we should make an effort to do it more often.
Janine chose to flip her sketch to suit the photos she wanted to use with these gorgeous new Sassafrass IndieGirl papers. Janine maintained all of the elements of the sketch while adding extra texture by glimmermisting some Prima lace with Graphite and adding it as a border. She also added extra flow to the layout by creating a meandering arrangement of flowers across the page with extra movement being achieved with the Primas new SIIP swirls.
And here’s two gorgeous takes on the card sketch from Jane Clark. Remember that the sketch is just a guide – just because it shows a rectangular element as the embellishment doesn’t mean you have to! In the first card Jane has mixed The Girls Paperie and Sassafras papers with some Prima flowers, the second has made gorgeous use of Tim Holtz papers and embellies.

As we mentioned last week, we’re looking forward to starting our new readers challenge this week. Don’t panic – you still have until next Tuesday 19th October to get your own projects emailed to us! We just thought we’d provide a little inspiration each week with some examples using the sketches from our own design team.
Suz loved how this sketch turned out so much that she’s left wondering why she doesn’t use bigger photos more often – part of the beauty of digital photography and scrapbooking is that you don’t have to be confined to regular 6x4 snaps all the time.
Because the photos of her daughter wreaking havoc in Spotlight were already very busy, Suz kept a plain cardstock background and followed the sketch to just add embellishment at each end of the double layout – a mixture of Heidi Swapp/Tattered Angels Crepe ribbon glimmer misted to co-ordinate with the layout, Anna Griffin paper ribbon, those gorgeous Prima Cloissone flowers and 7Gypsies practically made to order 97% Stickers.
Louise doesn't often do double paged layouts, and the sketch was the perfect start to showcase these gorgeous photos of her son. Using a basic background with highlights of coloured strips, the layout is pulled together with clever clustering of co-ordinating floral elements, including a handmade swirl flower and some small crystal swirl details.
Louise is an avid fan of sketch and challenge sites. So she was absolutely stoked when asked to work with the wonderful Becky Fleck Sketches. The advantages to having a sketch are numerous; however Louise particularly loves those that help her create layouts that have more than one photo on them.
For this particular single page sketch Louise has used a range of papers and embellishments from Jenni Bowlin Studios, she has complemented these with the use of the Hambly Studios Overlay, Twiddleybitz chipboard shapes, Pink Paislee ribbon pleats, and Sassafras Lass chipboard alphas.
Iris used the scrolls to frame the music sheet paper from Sassafras Lass. A mixture of fun elements placed here and there creates a fun and whimsical page perfect for a toddler page.
Finally, some card samples. This one uses different elements from a single 12x12 sheet of Webster’s Lullaby Lane and cardstock and Hero Arts stamped sentiment.

You will have the opportunity to vote for your favourite from each category each week..
Your favourite from each category for each week will then go up for a final vote at the end, and we’ll send the winner of each category their own brand new copy of Becky’s book, along with a prize pack of goodies!
Do I have to use all Aussie Scrap Source product?
We’d prefer if you featured product from some of Aussie’s amazing range of suppliers.. well, see all the logos in the blog header? There’s not much that’s not there, so odds are you will be using brands we carry! But no, it’s doesn’t have to be exclusively Aussie brands.
How often can I enter?
As much or as little as you like. You can enter any or all three categories (double layout, single layout, card) for all four weeks, or you can enter one in one week, or three in one week.. you get the idea. There’s no commitment, though obviously the more projects you enter the more chances you have to win!
How do I enter?
Create a layout or card based on the sketch of your choice. Scan or take a photo of it and email it to us at [email protected] with the words Pagemaps and the name of the sketch you’ve used e.g. Pagemaps Challenge Single Week 1 or Card Week 3, by the following Tuesday.. though for this first challenge we’re giving you two weeks to get organised so the first week of your layouts based on the sketches below will go up on Wednesday 20 October.
